Smarter people make smarter decisions, right? Maybe not when it comes to teams. Turns out, it's not high IQs that matter so much in team success, but some other surprizing factors. Like gender - yes, if you want a more successful team, add more women.
As reported in June's Harvard Business Review, Anita Woolley and Thomas Malone
found that the collective intelligence of a team was not related to the individual IQs of the team members, but instead was related to the number of women on the team. Teams that had members with higher IQs didn't earn much higher scores, but those that had more women did. What does this mean? Turns out, it's not gender so much as a trait that is more frequently found in female team members that matters: high social sensitivity. Team members who have high social sensititvity are better listeners, better collaborators, and improve team performance.
