Facilitation Skills

A facilitator is more than a presenter, or even a leader. A facilitator is responsible for combining the input and expertise of others in a process that successfully accomplishes a team goal. A facilitator must gain the confidence of the group quickly -- an ability that is based on strong physical presentation skills -- and must also shape and focus the interactions of the group.

A facilitator has many responsibilities, including:

  • Prepare and follow an agenda
  • Perform group introductions
  • Remain neutral in inter-group conflict
  • Be positive
  • Maintain focus and momentum during the meeting
  • Encourage participation
  • Protect ideas that are generated
  • Educate group members if needed
  • Keep ON TASK, ON TIME and ON MESSAGE

Most importantly, a facilitator must create an atmosphere where participants are comfortable sharing their thoughts and ideas. Sharing your own experiences will encourage others to do the same. Keep the process moving forward to allow the group to accomplish its goals, whatever they may be. And, if a problem does occur, it is your responsibility as the facilitator to intervene, correct the situation and move on.

The facilitator role is a weighty one, but if handled correctly, it an spell a big success for your group -- whether you're tackling a business plan or sharing funny stories around the fire over the holidays.
