About this Newsletter In Order of Importance
You may have the most polished delivery skills, but if your content isn't clear and concise, your presentation can leave the audience confused and frustrated. So, as the weather heats up, step into the air conditioning, draw the blinds, sip an iced coffee, and organize your content. Our tips below are sure to 'heat up' your next presentation.
Meeting Pointers: Which Came First -- The Chicken or the Egg?
Before your presentation, do your homework and get to know your audience. The more you know about them, the more you can tailor your presentation to their needs. When you can answer these questions, you're ready to take the stage:
Who are they?
Peers, newcomers, experts - each expects a different level of content
What do they already know about the topic? What they need to know (versus what would be nice to know
What motivates them?Learning, encouragement - make sure to weave these in
What action(s) do you need them to take?Change behavior, work differently, develop new ideas - be clear about what you need them to do after your presentation.
By taking the time to know your audience, your presentation will be more valuable and more relevant.
My Point Exactly: Putting Two & Two Together
In our Powerful Presentations workshop, we offer techniques for creating messages that will have the biggest impact on your audience. One technique is to begin with a solid outline, the foundation of your presentation and the best place to organize your thoughts. To structure your outline in the most effective way:
Use the 'key word' approach
Maintain parallel structure
Keep the sub-points short and clear
Include supporting material
If you are having trouble organizing your thoughts, try a data dump of your ideas. Then classify those ideas as main points or supportive points, making sure to include examples and applications of these ideas. Once your ideas are classified, order them effectively and edit out the unimportant or redundant ones.
