About this Newsletter Take the Ball and Run with It
It's the beginning of yet another fiscal year but, more importantly -- it's the end of the NFL season! That means the Super Bowl is right around the corner. Just as Dungy and Smith both want to coach their teams to victory, Point Taken wants to help you score big at your next meeting. Sharpen your skills with our presentation skills play-by-play tips below.
Meeting Pointers: Scout Your "Opponents"
Analyze your audience much like the Bears and Colts are analyzing each other before the big game. Being able to answer the following questions will help you to tailor your talk to fit your audience's specific needs.
Who are they?: Peers, newcomers, experts - each expects a different level of content
What do they know?: What they need to know versus what would be nice to know
What motivates them?: Learning or encouragement
What action(s) do you need them to take? : Change behavior, work differently, develop new ideas -- be clear about what you need them to do after your presentation
My Point Exactly: Have a Game Plan
Quarterbacks Rex Grossman and Peyton Manning know the plays they will run like the back of their hands. Your presentation will flow much smoother if you also have a game plan. The information on preparing your slides below will insure you leave your next presentation a winner.
Keep your slides simple: Use consistent fonts and backgrounds and do not include unneeded graphics or animation.
Remember the "six-pack rule": No more than six bullet points per slide, no more than six words per bullet in 18pt font or larger.
Speak to the audience: Remember to look and read, then turn and speak when presenting your slides.
Take a practice run: Check out the slides before your talk in the actual venue if possible.
My Point Exactly: Score with Your Biggest Fans
There is not an empty seat in the auditorium. Everyone is holding their breath as you give your dynamic and well-delivered presentation. And when you finish? Everyone is eager to shake your hand. Is this a dream of yours? With a little extra practice and some One-on-One Coaching from Point Taken, your fans will flock to your next presentation with the same enthusiasm as the big game.
