About this Newsletter Go Your Own Way
The most well received presenters retain their own personal conversation style regardless of the size of the audience. How do they do it? And how do they overcome their nerves? Whether in front of a large group or with just a few of your colleagues, you can best achieve likeability as a speaker by simply being yourself.

Meeting Pointers: More Than a Feeling
Your heart beats faster and your palms start to sweat. You're afraid your voice will crack when you begin to speak. You are not alone. Everyone gets nervous before giving a presentation, but, remember-your audience can only see what you show them.

While knowing your content inside-out can alleviate some of your fears, pacing yourself with sustained eye contact and vocal pauses will make you appear calm even when those butterflies rise up in your stomach.

Before your next presentation, review these basic delivery techniques:

  • Eyes: Connect, make a point, pause silently, move on
  • Voice: Get louder to get animated
  • Gestures: Natural and appropriate
  • Posture: Balanced and solid with deliberate movements
  • My Point Exactly: We are the Champions
To give a winning presentation that will make your co-workers envious of your skills and social grace, tailor the breadth and depth of your talk to meet your audience's needs. You don't want your content to be too complex for them to understand, but you don't want them falling asleep in their seats, either. Select the approach that is right for your audience:

HEADLIGHT Content illuminates a large area, but dimly Audience needs an overview
FLASHLIGHT Lights a much smaller area but with greater intensity Audience needs detailed information
LASER Narrows the scope to just a pinpoint with the highest intensity Audience needs specific details

To use these levels effectively, match the level of detail and intensity to the knowledge level of the audience; an audience needing a 'laser' talk is going to feel a 'headlight' talk is too basic, and a 'flashlight' audience will be lost with a 'laser' level focus on content.
