Creating Effective Visuals

A successful presentation rarely consists of the speaker alone. Most presenters use some type of visual aid during their talks -- notes, overheads, slides, charts, etc. The purpose of these visual aids is to support the speaker and strengthen the audience's understanding of the content.

To create visuals that effectively communicate your message to the audience, follow these guidelines:

  • Use High Contrast Colors
Blue, white and yellow provide maximum visibility for your presentation content.

  • Check Readability
Preview your slides from all corners of the room.

  • Follow the 'Rule of Six'
On a text slide, use no more than six lines of text per slide and no more than six words per line.

  • Keep It Simple
Remember: the slides are an outline of your talk...not the entire talk.
