Laughter and Atmosphere

Each person in an audience approaches a presentation with a distinct point of view and set of past experiences. It is the speaker's job to create an atmosphere that is comfortable for each one. Laughter is an excellent way to accomplish just that.

In a training environment, the participants are often there simply because they have to be. Using humor helps diffuse any negative emotions that the audience members may be feeling; in fact, they may be able to laugh at the very source of their anger and turn their attention to the material at hand.

Humor also helps audience members find a common ground. When they laugh together, they begin to relate to one another and to the speaker. Once that bond has formed, true learning can take place. The audience will enjoy the presentation, walk away with a positive memory of the experience and better retain the information.
