About this Newsletter New Year, New Resolutions
What's your resolution? Are you going to the gym three days a week? Putting more money into your 401K? Or perhaps making all of your meetings at work more efficient?
We spend an average of two days a week in meetings, and even the most experienced executive can have trouble keeping them on time and on task. So, consider some of these best practices for running an effective meeting. (You may end up with more time to spend on your other resolutions!)
Meeting Pointers: Five Easy Steps
When preparing for your meeting -- from the pre-work to the follow-up -- it is important to keep these tips in mind:
- State your meeting objective in one sentence. (If you can't, you're not ready to hold the meeting.)
- Start on time, end on time.
- Know your audience and your corporate culture.
- Work on becoming a better listener
- Remember next steps. The meeting is only part of the process of accomplishing work.
My Point Exactly: Facilitator Credibility
In a meeting, process and content are equally important. As the meeting facilitator, you have to communicate your ability to manage the process right from the beginning - in that first impression:
55 percent is Visual (how you look)
38 percent is Vocal (how you sound)
7 percent is Verbal (what you say)
Before you start a meeting, be sure to practice your non-verbal skills to insure your team will both listen and understand.
