Presenting with Visuals

You've selected your support material. You've built a clean and focused slide presentation. Now it's time to present these materials to your audience. How does a truly successful speaker interact with his or her visuals?

Delivery
When presenting with visuals -- slides, handouts, or flipcharts -- address all of your comments to the group, not to your support materials. Keep in mind the following two-step process:

  • Look and Read -- You are silent, facing the slide or chart. This pause allows the audience to read the slide, and prevents you from reading the slide word-for-word, creating a more interesting verbal discourse on the visuals being presented.
  • Turn and Speak -- You are presenting, facing the audience. Your voice will project further if you face the audience while speaking. Using this method also allows you to maintain eye contact with the audience.

    Content Organization
To clearly and effectively present your support material to your audience, remember to include the following:

  • Explanation -- WHAT are they looking at?
  • Interpretation -- WHY is this information important in the context of your presentation?
  • Illustration -- Give EXAMPLES that support your facts and bring the data to life for your audience.
  • Application -- Explain HOW TO use this information; give the audience next steps to consider.
